• People usually need help avoiding “excessive sitting times”; good intentions are not enough. So why not incorporate devices into your routines that are designed to encourage you to sit OR stand? A study (@ CDC.gov) shows these products are effective in reducing prolonged sitting.
• Get a height-adjustable desk workstation or a sit-stand TV wall mount. You’ll stand more because you can instantaneously choose to sit or stand while still engaged in computing, watching TV or gaming.
• Standing all day may not be practical, which is why a sit-stand device is ideal—feel free to sit and then get up and stretch every half hour, stand while on the phone, or stand during the exciting parts of a movie.
• Practically speaking, some solutions won’t be as effective: For example, electric motor-driven sit-stand desks are slow to adjust, which means you’ll be less inclined to change your position.
• Research suggests that combating “sitting disease” by adding gym-time may not work—it doesn’t eliminate the problem, which is too much sitting.
